As many of us know too well from experience with our own gardens back home- vacations aren’t always about relaxation and fun in nature.
So before you leave on your trip make sure that if there’s anything at all important like watering flowers or gardening tasks waiting for attention when you return, then write it down so they get done!
Out of Town Garden Care
If you’re going to be away for more than a couple days, ask somebody else in charge of caring for your plants. Make sure it’s someone trustworthy like a friend or neighbor- preferably someone who understands gardening and plant care!
Or work out some kind of trade favor deal with another gardener; let them handle your plants while you are travelling, and gift them some plants in return.
Garden Tips for Travelers
No one wants to come back home and see their garden dying. You can always take a chance by asking someone else, but if you prepare ahead of time as much as possible then it will keep plants alive while away! Below are my tips for traveling gardener:
Give your plants a thorough watering before you go. Give the weeds and dead leaves a haircut, or clip them off so they don’t grow back while we’re gone!
If it’s been more than two weeks since you last saw any pests (ants, bees), give insecticidal soap spray as pest control – just be careful not to kill anything good in between doses if there are still aphids around after spraying already.
Even healthy gardens need some time away from people sometimes; use this opportunity for upkeep like cleaning up garden tools that may have rust on their blades, etc.
When it comes to lawn care, the most important factor is maintaining a healthy soil. Mulch can be used as an effective way of keeping roots cool and preventing evaporation, which will help your plants thrive in hot weather conditions or when watering is not an option.
But, make sure it does not exceed 3 inches otherwise snails may crawl up through their coverings looking for moisture sources, so if they are around that’s all you’ll see!
Finally, cutting your lawn right before you go on vacation will lead to a shorter green grass and it will not tolerate dry conditions as good as longer grass.
Container Plant Care While on Vacation
It’s often difficult to care for container plants because they dry out quickly. During the peak of summer, you may need to water your plant more frequently and move it into shaded area if possible while away, so that’s one way of keeping them alive!
If not at home, water them very nicely before heading out – this should help keep the leaves from turning brown during those long days without rain or without being watered.
Also, mulch is not just for in-ground plants, as it will also help to conserve moisture. Organic materials such as bark chips or other types of organic matter placed on top can reduce evaporation levels by up to 50%.
