Plant diseases can be a pain for any gardener, but we need to remember that the problem lies with three things: an infected plant, pathogen attacking it and environmental conditions which encourage this type of disease.
If just one of these things is removed there won’t be disease anymore. So instead of waiting for a problem to appear, consider preventing it.
Take a look at these four ways you can eliminate one factor from the “disease triangle.”
Before Buying, Inspect the Plant
The internet can be an excellent resource for learning about gardening. Learn what healthy plants look like by getting catalogs or books that show them, then compare with your garden to prevent any diseases from spreading!
Introducing your garden is an important step, especially if you are starting with plants. Instead of choosing the first plant that comes to mind for this task (maybe one containing insects), look at how healthy it looks and make sure there aren’t any signs of rot or deceased areas on its roots!
Watch Out for Bugs
Plants are living things that need to be taken care of in order for them to survive. Serious damage can happen when plants get attacked, so it’s important to make sure all areas which were potentially affected by pests or insects are not getting into your home to spread the infection!
What do aphids and thrips have in common? They’re both carriers of a serious problem that can affect commercial producers. Leafhoppers too carry aster yellow disease, though not as often or severely than impatiens necrotic spot virus does!
Plant Disease-Resistant Varieties
There are disease-resistant plant varieties that can get sick from some disease, but they fight it off. Some tomatoes are marked VFN resistant which means they have the ability to resist Verticillium wilt, Fusarium Wilt and nematodes.
Most plants aren’t labeled as disease-resistant but that doesn’t mean they’re not resistant. Many companies can provide you with plants to help control black spots and powdery mildews in your garden!
Water Properly
If you want to avoid creating a perfect environment for disease, it is important that your plants have as much water as they need. Pathogens in the air and soil need this moisture so badly! You can avoid creating the perfect scenario for diseases, by choosing from various methods of watering which reduce the moisture on the leaves of plants.
