They also help during dry weather when containers need frequent irrigation, but remember that we’re talking about fresh or clean ones!
Diaper Filling for Moisture Control
Did you know that disposable diapers are made from hydrogel? This type of material absorbs liquid like a sponge and can help plants grow better.
It’s also used in high-tech bandages, such as those for burns or severe scrapes and abrasions!
How to Use Diaper Gel in Plant Soil
Using diapers in containers is a great way to ensure that your plants get the water they need. Pick up some cheap, store-bought ones for starters and then tear open an individual diaper.
Add just enough water just until you have a thick gel like consistency before mixing it all together with equal parts of soil from home improvement stores, or landscaping centers. Put them inside their pots, and you are ready to plant your plants.
If you are planting into a large container, it will need more than one diaper. Make sure to make some holes in the plastic so that soil can drain; if not done this way, root rot may be an issue and cause plant death.
Is the Use of Diapers for Plant Growth Healthy?
Hydrogels are not natural materials, and even though they may not hurt you as much it is a bad idea to use them too often.
Hydrocolloid diapers will eventually leach chemicals into soil that could cause cancer or other diseases in your vegetables if used for moisture control.
Also, we do not advise using diaper filling for controlling moisture if you plan on growing vegetables in containers.
