Next time you go to the nursery, remember these common mistakes and don’t ever repeat them again.
Here are the 8 most common mistakes gardeners should avoid!
1. Keep an eye on the leaves
The leaves on your plant can tell you a lot. Yellow, brown or wilted? That means they need water! But what about when the leaves are limp and blackened with sooty spots- does that mean something is wrong at home for our favorite little green friend?
It might mean that a disease has attacked them, so always keep a close eye on your plant’s leaves.
2. Avoid leggy and lanky plants
Despite their appearance, leggy and lanky plants need plenty of light to grow well.
If you’re growing them in a dark area or have been over-fertilizing these types, this can invite pests like aphids which will cause leafy greasy leaves that are prone to diseases.
3. The quality of the garden center is important
A garden center’s quality is important. You might think it sounds stupid, but make sure you see how they organized the area and if there are many pots that have fallen over or anything like that; plus check out what kind of soil their plants live in!
4. Look out for pests and diseases
Have you ever come across a plant that was covered in pests? Pests can be found on the underside and at growing tips. The most common types include aphids, scales or mites for example!
5. Closely Examine the Roots
As you examine the roots of a plant, they should be firm and green. If they’re brown or soft in texture it means that this particular variety is not for your yard!
6. Don’t buy plants in full bloom
When buying plants, pick ones with healthy-looking foliage instead of immediately going for fully grown specimens just because they seem adorable.
7. Get informed (ask, ask ask!)
You have questions about what to plant or how much? Or maybe you have certain doubts for the type of plant for your garden.
Don’t worry! Just kindly ask some of the nursery employees, I am sure they’d be happy to help you out!
8. Check out for weeds
You know how expensive plants are, so if there’s weed in the pot then it would be best not buy one.
